It’s the end of an unforgettable year at MTN World, and we thought that there could be no better way of wrapping up a year in aerosol news than giving out awards to the people who defined the last 12 months in the world of graffiti. So here come the First Annual MTN World Awards – ten categories of varying significance and ten winners who can be proud of having their names associated with such a prestigious prize ceremony. So without further ado…

Award for Toy Beef Lil Butcher VS Cop 2

Depending on your perspective, beef is an entertaining aspect of graffiti that helps to keep standards high in your city or a pathetic display of toxic masculinity that curbs progression in our scene. In any case, the confrontation between Baer associate Lil Butcher and Cop 2 made for hilarious viewing, as the “troubled doll” ran up on the egg version of the much maligned New Yorker.

Award for Selling Out Lushsux

The Melbourne Mammoth Lushsux has long been playing a different game to the rest of the world’s writers. Having given up on style writing some years ago, 2021 was the year that he went all out to get paid, largely thanks the possibilities of selling NFTs of his trademark meme walls through frankly baffling new platforms like Nifty Gateway. The digital wallet of MTN World is still pretty bare but we imagine his dream of owning a Lambo is close to becoming a reality with contributions from his new tech bro followers.

Trigger Award Germes Gang

Our anti-style publications on social media should come with a trigger warning. There was no better example of this than the furore generated when we posted a few photos from three lads from Lisbon known as Germes Gang. Who would have thought that a few kooky collages of comic book characters could conjure up so much criticism amongst our followers? It seems that certain commentors would like to dictate how other people express themselves with spray paint.

Award for Planned Capping Christopher Walken vs Banksy

You read that right. In November 2020, Christopher Walken went over a Banksy original whilst acting as a graffiti cleaner in Bristol. Whatever your opinion of the English stencil maestro, his work disappearing off the streets is big news. Except… it wasn’t as straightforward as all that. Never shy of a showbiz stunt, Banksy actually created the piece for the purpose of the BBC series called The Outlaws, and its removal by the veteran actor made headlines around the world. Genius.

Comeback of the Year Twist

It seems to MTN World that they don’t make A-list graffiti writers like they used to. The legends who went from tags and throws to collabos and shows are few and far between, and some have disappeared off the map completely. However, one of those universally adored names popped up again in 2020, in the form of some incredible hands in the French capital along with a piece on its subway system. The true identity of Twist may never be known, but we hope it’s not the last graffiti we see from the Californian king.

It Sounded Like A Good Idea At The Time Award Good Guy Boris

It was another notable year for Good Guy Boris. In February he dropped an action figure and of course couldn’t keep away from the NFT game, also minting a picture of a whole car featuring his famous face. In April it appeared that he’d come up with a scheme to keep his car on the road and his trunk full of paint, opening an OnlyFans account. Promising to post exclusive graffitich content for the price of $20 a month, the Bulgarian bomber was active on the adult platform for just three months before breaking off the relationship.

Rich All of a Sudden Award JDL

Judith De Leew is an Amsterdam-based artist whose career took her from tagging to painting socially-conscious murals all around the world. She has made her moves wisely, painting at important events like Wynwood and Roskilde as well as collaborating with worthy partners like Yourban2030. But she hit the headlines in 2020 with an incredible act. In November she sold some work for the crypto equivalent of $2.9 million, donating one million of the earnings to Gioca Con Il Coure, a charity that looks after children undergoing cancer treatment. Bravo.

Fake Graffiti Spotter Award Duro The Third

Duro The Third is a Toronto based veteran of graffiti and BMX that is no stranger to corporate collaborations, having worked with brands like Lexus, Walmart and Amex in the past. So, he was in a great position to point out an absolute fail orchestrated by Gucci and Balenciaga this year. The two luxury brands wanted to tap that fat cap spirit, so huge tags featuring the word GUCCI popped up on the front of Balenciaga stores worldwide. Except the marketing geniuses figured that it would be better to produce enormous adhesives instead of letting loose with an aerosol, with predictably wack results. Say no to fake graffiti!

Dissing The King Award Roc Blackblock

Closer to home, Roc Blackblock gets a prize for going after the King. And we’re not talking about a writer. Following the incarceration of Catalan rapper Pablo Hasél, the outspoken activist took part in a jam calling for his release. He pulled no punches with his portraits, painting the King of Spain and his father alongside the dictator Franco as the targets of arrows painted in republican and anarchist colors. Aiming to reach an international audience, the artist assured us that “Spain is a fascist state.” Ouch.

Cap of the Year Award Pocket Cap

A few years ago, Montana Colors paint switched to the pocket cap as the default nozzle that would come complete with each aerosol. The reason has never officially been revealed, but MTN World can tell you in complete confidence that it was to encourage anti-style graffiti and provoke a culture war within the scene that would lead to more capping thus selling more paint and generating more engagement on the Montana Colors social media. The plan worked a treat, and the cap has therefore been officially recognized as the finest on the market, despite what the haters may say.

Lifetime Confusion Award Montana Cans

We complete the ceremony with a special award created by our long-suffering Instagram admin. Responsible for checking all the mentions, DMs, comments and requests for sponsorship every day of the year, over half of his working week is dedicated to explaining to ill-informed writers that tag us instead of rival brands that Montana Colors and the other Montana are two different companies. Fortunately an article appeared this year explaining everything, so our followers are soon enlightened. So what did you think? Who did we forget? To kick-off, the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour, the Free Children campaign, curated by Street Art for Mankind, set about getting the message out on 100 billboards in New York City and online. Japanese, New York-based street artist DRAGON76 painted a mural in East Village, Manhattan, supporting the “STOP ASIAN HATE” movement.

“Zero Hunger” by Victor Ash was created to support the mission of the United Nations world food programme. It was part of 6 Zero Hunger Murals that Street art Mankind created to raise awareness and mobilise action to combat worldwide food insecurity and, in the US, food injustice that disproportionately impacts African-Americans communities.

Conversations From Calais document conversations between volunteers and migrants and pastes them onto city walls to re-humanise the refugee crisis. The collaboration with Build Hollywood saw these simple yet thought-provoking conversations take over billboards for the first time in eight UK cities.

JUNE

“This mural shines a light on the vital role of ecosystem restoration in tackling climate change and food system instability, while also supporting natural freshwater and public health. Ecosystems are essential for all life on Earth however human activity has significantly depleted them. In fact, the world loses enough forests to cover a football pitch every three seconds. We must focus on restoring nature. Conservation is no longer enough.
This mural is for the youth, the world they will inherit, the challenges they will face, and the leading role that is thrust upon them in ensuring a more sustainable future. JULY

Adnate has worked closely with indigenous people of their native land, especially with Indigenous Australians. He paints large scale murals around Australia and the world, creating a statement of reclaiming the land that was always theirs. He endeavours to capture the stories and emotions of each subject he paints, encouraging the audience to feel through their own experience. In July he painted a portrait of Stan Grant, a young girl and a portrait of local elder Aunty Loretta… a huge wall highlighting indigenous leadership both locally and nationally.

AUGUST

Banksy confirmed he was behind the number of artworks that appeared in seaside towns on the east coast of the UK this summer. With many more families staying home in 2020 due to the pandemic and travel restrictions, Banksy turned the staycation into a fabulous Spraycation.

SEPTEMBER

FEARLESS/

‘Abhaya’ was a bronze tiger sculpture by SA artist Sonny that was installed at the United Nations HQ in New York and is a celebration of the resilience of the tiger.

“After a century of decline, wild tiger numbers are starting to increase. But, it’s important to remember that threats to tigers are ever-present. This is why the tiger is depicted in motion, jumping forward into the future; a future that relies so heavily on the actions we take today. As the tiger jumps it’s breaking away, symbolic of the fragility of the species, while the splashes of oranges and purples are a symbol of hope and a reminder of the colour these animals bring to our world.” #sonny

October 15th is celebrated all over the world as the Day of the Blind and Visually Impaired, the first 3D models of murals for blind and visually impaired people were set up in Belgrade at two locations. These 3D models are a game-changer and it would be great to see more of these around the world .

NOVEMBER

Right now, plastic pollution threatens biodiversity and marine life, food safety, human health and coastal tourism. By 2050, the World Economic Forum believes our oceans will contain more plastic than fish. The Museum of Plastic provided a hopeful peek into what life could look like if we curb climate change now. It reflects humanity’s history and future with plastic and is part of the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), which is underway in Glasgow, UK. Here is one of the murals that caught our attention …

DECEMBER

Bordalo II created Plastic Mom and Baby Monkeys in Miami, USA at Wynwood walls official. The sculpture is made entirely from trash and forms part of his big trash animal series that highlights waste production, plastic pollution and one use products that are polluting the world and killing our animals. The sheer size of this sculpture speaks volumes …

The OFFKAT sneaker is a collaboration between Katsu and the late Virgil Abloh that is guaranteed to turn heads in any city, if you’re lucky enough to find the right size. Although this piece by New York skateboard house Supreme isn’t the vision of a veteran writer trying to earn an honest buck, its application in the graffiti game is obvious. Anything that’s worth painting is behind locked doors, so why not look good in the gritty action flicks whilst trying to prise open that last hatch before you get five minutes in the company of the subway car of your choice?

“THE LEGEND OF” CORNBREAD PRINT - $200

How about a piece of actual art? Here’s a joint by the man who many say started this shit, not least the Philadelphia writer himself. This collaboration with the world’s top street art nostalgia merchants Beyond The Streets features a screen-printed backboard tagged by the dude who got famous by painting on an elephant to impress a girl. Allegedly.

“$150 MYSTERY BOX” BY CLAW MONEY - $150

Totally undecided what to buy that special writer in your life? NYC bomber, designer and meme queen Claw Money has got you covered. The contents of her mystery boxes will remain under wraps until the special day arrives, but you can be sure they’ll be stuffed with garments, merch and other drip from her web store. You can choose the size of clothes contained therein and there’s even kids’ versions to keep your offspring looking lit.

“MTA X KRINK K42 BOX SET” - $100

Craig Castleman and company make some of the most elegant art supplies in the game. The brand is practically a household name in artistic circles, but their dedication to the graffiti community is unwavering. Krink take collaborations to the next level with a box set featuring the timeless graphics of the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

“NEOFUTURO FC SUPERIOR KNITTED SCARF” BY DEMSKY - $70

You may not be familiar with the work of Apparelsy, but the Spanish brand has produced some exceptionally succulent drops featuring artists from Iberia and beyond in recent years. Items featuring 2Shy, Shiat and Nano4814 sold out long ago, but a recent collection designed by Demsky is currenly in stock, and our pick is the knitted scarf to complete your fit this winter.

“PATIPERRO” BOOK BY ALE VLOK – $50

The Chilean globetrotter Ale VLOK published one of the most complete guides to the international train writing scene in 2020, featuring contributions from such seminal figures as Moses, Mser, Vino and Cyrus. “Patiperro – The diary of a Sudaka” should be an essential fixture in the home library of anyone interested in this secretive subculture.

“MTN X OPEN ARMS LIMITED EDITION” BY MONTANA COLORS - $30

It would be amiss of us not to include an item from the MTN catalog in this list, but I’m sure you’ll agree that this is a definite cop. Our latest limited edition aerosol is a collaboration with Open Arms, an NGO dedicated to save the lives of the most vulnerable people in the Mediterranean Sea. Featuring in a photo by OA photographer Santi Palacios, all profits from sales of the can will go to keeping the rescue boats running.

“GRAFFITI BIBLE” BY ESKE TOUBORG - $30

Everything that you wanted to know about graffiti but were afraid to ask. The Graffiti Bible by the Danish artist and author Eske Touborg dropped in late 2021 and claims to be the definitive guide that will take you from toy to king status in a matter of months. Maybe. There are also in-depth interviews with fascinating figures in the game like Mickey TFP, Bates and MadC, which aim to inform and inspire aspiring artists.

“WRITERS ON WAX” BY RUYZDAEL - $15

Think that graffiti writers are limited to hands, throw-ups, the occasional burner and even a mural at a push? Think again! Dutch designers Ruyzdael have started a label called Writers On Wax, and their output has included such luminaries as Ven aka Adam X and Swedish oddball Nug. Lucky for you, their finest vinyl is still available, in the shape of the Writers on Wax Volume 1 compilation. Tracks come from writers like Os Gemeos, Yalt and Ces53 and make a worthy addition to any record collection. Whatever you wanna buy for your writer friend, make sure you cop it from a local independent store, reputable shark reseller or take advantage of vandal sales events like Rack Friday. Happy holidays!
