First time graffiti in certain areas

Hey guys, so I just recently moved to a new area in California and it's a pretty sketchy vibe city with a ton of crackheads/heroin addicts/meth heads, and a lot of hispanic gang members. I wanted to paint so I explored the area around me for a while and found a nice train track spot that's being renovated so no trains go through it or anything. I already know the construction workers/train workers don't really go to a few spots that I went to so I'm not worried about them. I'm also not really worried about cops because I've done illegal shit my whole life and used to it. Hobos don't bother me much because I'm from NYC and we have a lot of them there and they're mostly chill or lazy anyway. The two things I am worried about however is a) Drug addicts. They might try to rob or stab potentially. But even more so, they drop their crack pipes and heroin needles everywhere and I'm pretty nervous about stepping on needles and shit. b) Gang members, even moreso than drug addicts. I saw a lot of gang tags representing and going over other peoples pieces, so I guess that's a hot spot for them. It's outside of the neighborhoods because it's on the train tracks like I said. In NYC there's a good amount of gangs in certain areas but most don't mess with you if you're clearly not banging and just doing art or walking through. But here, at least once so far in this neighborhood I've had a hispanic man follow me and say shit like "Who are you, where you from, do you know where you're at" but he could've just been a wannabe bum harrassing me. But it was near the tags. So this is kind of what has me the most nervous. I don't want to go paint and get halfway through a tag just to get shot or shanked in the back or something. What should I do if a gang member pulls up on me or tries talking to me. Any tips for any of these scenarios? Thanks a lot.
